Goal 6: A Clean and tidy house
Daily Habit: Tidy Up Behind myself in the kitchen after every meal
Because: I like to live in a nice clean environment, I feel much calmer and happier, but cleaning and tidying certainly don’t come naturally! My husband, Ross and I hate spending our precious weekend time doing the ‘team clean’ or stressing because someone said last minute they’re visiting and there’s an inch thick of dust on the toilet seat and fluff bunnies from the rug floating about the living room. So if I set aside 30 minutes a day, stick a podcast on and get to it, hopefully it’ll never feel like such a huge task.
I wanted my teeny tiny home cleaning goal to be ‘close all cupboard doors behind me.’ You’d think that would happen naturally, but no, not me! You know that Tiktok video where they close all the doors to the beat in that song? That’s me! Except I don’t close them until I walk back in to the room and realise. Drawers too.
Ross said I wasn’t allowed to just start with the doors. I threw in the drawers but he still wasn’t having it soooo we compromised on tidying up after myself in the kitchen after EVERY meal I’ve cooked. Its actually really hard, not a teeny tiny habit it all…hhhmmf! I really have to remind myself to do it and it doesn’t even take long but I really have to force myself. It is going to help with the NEAT though. I’ve been doing this for just over a week and I don’t think I’ve slipped up but it still doesn’t feel natural. Also, he’s left the pan he used to cook pasta last night (its now 7pm the next day) and he’s not cleaned it yet. Do I be the bigger, smugger person and wash it for him or do I leave it and gloat?
We are lucky that we live in a 2 bedroom house. Our bedroom is big but annoyingly shaped; the radiator is right where you’d put a chest of drawers, the perpendicular wall has a laundry cupboard door on it, if I put anything under the window, I can’t reach the window to open it and one side of the ceiling is coombed. Its frustratingly bare and could do with a bit of money being spent to strip off the textured wallpaper, move the radiator, make the laundry cupboard door a slider and heave the big wardrobe about to rearrange the furniture. I’d like shutters. And the carpet, we’ve still not replaced the previous owner’s carpet yet. We could do with nice bed side and dressing tables too but we’ll be next year before we can really get stuck in. Doesn’t mean I can’t plan it though. After watching far too many episodes of ‘Your Home Made Perfect’ (they’ve been on every night this week) part of me feels like I could maybe even fit some sort of walk in wardrobe situation. The only issue being that none of the 120+ year old walls are straight or at right angles so it would be quite a challenge to fit any shelf system. And I’d like a loungey chair in there too. Its a really nice, bright room that gets the sun all day so I like reading in there when I’m bored of the livingroom.
I’m going to draw out the layout and maybe even mark it up on Sketch Ups free trial, Ross assures me its easy. In the meantime though I can continue my Pinterest obsession, and prettify our bed with some new bed covers.
I found soooo many pretty ones and its taken most of the afternoon to make the list just 10! The best ones for summer are 100% linen; they’re breathable, natural, durable, hypoallergenic, cool, relaxed, biodegradable, naturally crumpled but also pretty expensive. The cotton ones are great for summer too and generally a little more affordable. The influencers seem to swear by silk pillowcases but I’ve never tried them. Most of my bedding collection has come from my Granny Panny or a gift / voucher of some sort. If I was picking my own for our bedroom, I’d go for semi plain ones in fairly muted tones so I can get more exciting throws and cushions. For the guest beds I think I’d be a bit more adventurous, I’ve fallen in love with Poppy and Honesty (listed twice below) but I’ll be needing to save my pocket money a few months to indulge in them! I seem to have fairly expensive bedding taste but Matalan, Asda and Tesco have really great options if the others below aren’t in summer sales yet. All prices listed are for a king size duvet cover and 2 pillow cases.
Company: Marks and Spencers
I do love a M&S purchase and I’m always bigging them up in an effort to keep them on our high streets. I also love a textured bedding, the colour is still plain but the texture makes it a bit cosier and softer.
Company: J by Jasper Conran via Debenhams
I’m not usually a Jasper Conran fan, its a bit modern for me but I do really like this printed cotton duvet cover for some reason. I think its really chic.
I’ve been a big fan of Zara Home for quite a while but with posting from Spain / Portugal I wasn’t always impressed with the state in which it arrived at the house! I haven’t ordered from them recently but I do really love their collections. It really reflects their clothing collections and this set’s muted and classic pattern is floral without being too in your face floral.
Company: Poppy and Honesty
I couldn’t not include another Poppy and Honesty set. I love the colours and the linen and I think I’d get this one for the guest beds (when I’m rich).
Another gorgeous textured one. This one is more natural and I love the warm stoney colour. I’d say its much more modern and less cute than the M&S one but could easily fit with most bedroom schemes. I’d have a good shot at keeping this its original colour too!
Company: La Redoute
This is a company I’ve never bought from but seen it tagged so many times over Instagram. They have a huge selection of bed covers and loads of nice printed ones. In general the site’s really well priced too. Worth a look.
Company: The White Company
How could I do a bed cover selection without The White Company? In my opinion they’re the Queens of simple white bedding. And there’s just something calming and luxurious about quality plain white bedding. How on earth I’d ever keep it pure white I’ve no idea, any tips are very welcome. I’d definitely need to iron this set too.
Last question – do you iron your bed sheets? I LOVE fresh from the washing line, ironed bed sheets but I’m never excited to battle with them over the board so generally don’t bother. Would get some good NEAT in though if I did!
